Fire Prosecutions Blog - September 2018

We bring you these latest fire prosecutions to highlight the importance of fire safety and to raise awareness of the risks and fatalities which can occur when it is breached.

Cheshire based Bispham Green Brewery Company Ltd have been fined £38K for breaching fire safety at The Wizard pub in Alderley Edge.

The case against the company was brought to court following a fire in 2016. When the fire occurred crews quickly attended the scene where they discovered a fire in the kitchen area. The member of staff who had reported the incident had managed to leave the building but has to return to the first floor twice to retrieve the keys for locked fire exits.

The fire crews noted a number of fire safety issues at the pub with a prohibition notice being issued by enforcement officers to prevent anyone from living at the premise.

A post-fire inspection found locked fire escapes, inadequate fire separation between floors and no fire alarm system within the staff living quarters.

District Judge Sanders said: “The lack of appropriate fire safety measures created a serious risk of harm and a dangerous cocktail in the event of a fire”.

These cases serve as a reminder of the legal responsibilities landlords and agents have in ensuring the safety of occupants in residential and commercial premises.
