What does a fire warden do?

24th March 2023

Fire wardens/marshals are nominated individuals within an organisation who are responsible for implementing preventative control measures and safeguarding staff and visitors in the instance of a fire. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, in this blog post we will explore the wider role of a fire warden, their responsibilities and how our in-depth accredited courses can prepare you for all things to do with fire safety.

In the first of this series on the responsibilities of people who’ve been formally trained to oversee fire safety within an organisation, we’re looking at the important role of Fire Wardens.

Fires not only put lives at risk but they can cause catastrophic damage to buildings, which is why having a fire safety procedure in place is crucial and the role of a Fire Warden is important in any business. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) order 2005 states that businesses are legally required to provide adequate training, information and instruction for individuals with fire safety responsibilities. Fire Warden training is an excellent way to improve your organisation’s fire prevention practices and share the workload in the implementation of good fire safety management.

Our Fire Warden Training courses

We offer an extensive course portfolio of industry specific Fire Warden training courses to cover all aspects of fire safety to suit all organisations, regardless of their sector. So, whether your organisation is a care home or a school, we’ve got you covered. Our industry-specific Fire Warden courses are suited to individuals who are nominated to undertake any fire safety responsibilities including Fire Wardens/Marshalls, deputies and safety representatives. Upon successful completion of the course, delegates will receive a certificate of attendance which is approved by the Institute of Fire Safety Managers (subject to validation criteria).

What delegates will learn

Delivered by our experienced trainers, our Fire Warden courses are 3.5 hours in duration. This is divided into 3 hours of theory and ½ hour of practical exercises. Delegates will learn the essentials of fire wardens/marshals in their chosen industry setting and be equipped with the skills and theoretical knowledge to confidently undertake their fire safety duties.

Some of the key points delegates will be able to do upon successful completion are:

    • Understand what causes fire and how it spreads
    • Understand various fire phenomenon, including backdrafts
    • Move in a smoke-filled environment more confidently
    • Carry out efficient and effective fire evacuations of premises
    • Assess what size fire they can safely deal with, with the use of appropriate fire-fighting equipment and confidently operate it
Where training takes place

Our Fire Warden training courses are held at your location / premises and are suitable for a maximum of 15 delegates. If you require a larger number of delegates to attend we can arrange two sessions at the same venue on the same day to ensure all relevant employees receive the essential training. Our fully qualified trainers will provide the projector, laptop and screen for the presentation. However, to help us facilitate the course, we simply require a training room that is large enough to accommodate the required number of attendees and an area equivalent to the size approximately 3 car parking spaces away from any buildings or combustibles for the practical exercises.
