Back to basics. Fire safety training - why it is important for every business.

31st January 2024

If you are mapping out your health and safety program for 2024, you will inevitably be looking into fire safety training too. If you are new to this whole area of health and safety, you might well be asking yourself why it is so important.

Each year we see hundreds of delegates on our Fire Warden, Fire Extinguisher, Fire Risk Assessor and Fire Manager courses and, once they have been through the training modules, it all becomes apparently clear why fire safety training is critically essential for every business.

Here is just one of our many testimonials that show the value of our courses:

“Really useful in making me think about the many possible aspects of fire safety. I am much more conscious of all the little ways in which vigilance is required”. Fire Warden Training delegate

In this blog, we take you back to basics to explain why fire safety training is not an optional consideration, but an essential requirement for UK companies. Here we look at two simple but important courses that provide critical training to people in your company who are entrusted with initial responsibilities around fire safety.

If you work in an industrial or commercial business, UK law requires you to have nominated staff trained in certain levels of fire safety and fire awareness. It also requires you to make sure you have a sufficient and up to date fire risk assessment in place, and to ensure that policies and reports are continually reviewed when required.

Ultimately, what all our various training courses aim to provide is the knowledge and expertise to:

    • Identify risks and hazards that could cause a fire.
    • Understand your company’s legal and statutory responsibilities towards your employees and visitors, with regards to all aspects of fire safety.
    • Undertake fire risk assessments and fire emergency plans.
    • Make sure staff training is up to date.

And the confidence:

To evacuate and activate the right professional response in the unfortunate event of a fire.

Planning and preparation are everything.

Vulcan courses are designed to impart expert knowledge from our experienced fire safety trainers who will take delegates through real-life scenarios to help them understand the issues they need to consider. We use a mixture of techniques including multimedia presentations, practical exercises, templates, and reference materials to ensure delegates get a thorough understanding of their subject.

Our Fire Warden training courses are designed to cover a range of different sectors, including care homes, construction, healthcare, hotels and schools. Each course is designed to improve fire safety prevention in each setting and equip Fire Wardens with a detailed understanding of their responsibilities within the workplace. As with all our courses, delegate numbers are limited (in this instance) to just 15 staff to ensure quality training and hands-on guidance throughout the course.

With our Fire Extinguisher and Assessor training courses, we focus on an everyday firefighting extinguishers. When a fire breaks out, this simple piece of equipment can help extinguish a small fire before it spreads and becomes dangerous. This 90-minute course involves 1 hour of theory and 30 minutes of practical water-based fire extinguishers on a real fire simulator.

It is a simple but important investment in basic fire safety that will give nominated members of staff the technical ability and confidence to deploy a fire extinguisher effectively and not put staff at risk. This course is limited to 15 delegates and requires a space equal to 4 parking spaces in a safe outside area.

These are just two of our entry level training courses which provide delegates with robust knowledge of their responsibilities. As with all our courses, they are approved and accredited by the Institute of Fire Safety Managers and delivered at venues around the UK by our team of expert trainers.
